Kate’s Journey: A Hard Lesson in Choosing the Right Surgeon

For Kate, undergoing breast augmentation was meant to be an investment in her confidence and self-care. After breastfeeding four children over 12 years, she was excited to take this step for herself. However, what started as a hopeful transformation soon turned into a distressing experience filled with complications, medical neglect, and emotional turmoil.

The Decision to Undergo Surgery

Like many patients, Kate believed she had done her research and was choosing a qualified surgeon she could trust. She opted for breast augmentation, a tummy tuck, and hernia repair—a significant procedure that required an experienced professional.

During her consultation, her surgeon strongly encouraged larger implants, claiming that most patients regret not going bigger. When the topic of implant rippling came up, he briefly mentioned that silicone would reduce the risk but never went into detail about the potential complications.

Kate recalls:

“That was the first and only time I ever heard the word rippling. He said he would see what he could get in there, so I wouldn’t know until I woke up, but it would be anything between 400 to 600cc.”

Upon waking from surgery, Kate was pleased with the size of her implants, though she initially felt they were a bit large for her frame. Unfortunately, complications that don’t always appear within the first year began surfacing just five months post-surgery.

When Everything Started Going Wrong

At first, Kate noticed mild rippling. But soon after, lateral displacement set in, and her implants started shifting out of place. What began as a minor concern worsened over time, leading to both physical discomfort and emotional distress.

When Kate returned to her surgeon for help, she was met with dismissal, blame, and a lack of accountability.

“My doctor said it was not bad and that anything wrong had to be my fault. He told me I must not have taken care of them properly. He made me cry and treated me terribly.”

Rather than discussing viable solutions, the surgeon belittled Kate’s concerns and suggested an absurd “solution”:

“He showed me before pictures and said that we could just rip them out, and he could take me back to that. He told me to wear a shoe string for six weeks. I did. It didn’t help.”

In addition to her poorly positioned implants, Kate was also dissatisfied with her tummy tuck results—her scar was extremely high and thick, her belly button was deformed, and she had sutures trying to break through her skin. All of this after paying $13,000.

Despair & Seeking Help Elsewhere

After being told repeatedly that nothing was wrong, Kate started questioning herself:

  • Was this really my fault?
  • Did I waste my life’s savings on this?
  • Would I now need a breast lift?

Each time Kate laid down, her left breast drifted toward her armpit. She consulted multiple plastic surgeons, who confirmed her implants were too large for her chest width and she would require a capsulotomy and smaller implants.

When she contacted her original surgeon’s clinic, she was told it would take several months to get an appointment. Frustrated and feeling hopeless, she realized:

  • Do I wait another seven months just to leave crying again?

After speaking with the clinic’s nurse, she was informed that the surgeon would not correct the problem. It was the last straw.

Finding Hope: A Surgeon Who Listened

Determined to find a solution, Kate finally found a reputable, board-certified plastic surgeon who not only acknowledged the severity of her case but also treated her with the compassion and respect she deserved.
Her new surgeon was empathetic and horrified by her experience. He explained in detail:

  • Why her implants were causing displacement
  • How her oversized implants had stretched her tissue and skin
  • What could realistically be done to correct the issue

Kate’s implants were far beyond the recommended size for her chest wall, leading to severe tissue and skin stretching. This significantly limited her revision options, as there is only so much internal suturing that can be done before the breast shape becomes deformed.

A Surgeon Who Went Above & Beyond

Unlike her original surgeon, this doctor genuinely cared about finding a solution. He went the extra mile by reaching out to Alloderm, a company that provides biologic mesh used in breast reconstruction, and helped secure funding to offset the cost of Kate’s revision surgery.

“I almost cried. I knew this would be a huge help for me but never thought I would be able to afford it.”
Kate’s revision was scheduled for August 3, 2017, and she finally felt hopeful.

The Revision Plan

Her new surgeon devised a detailed plan to ensure Kate’s best possible outcome:

  • 485cc silicone moderate implants – More proportionate to her body
  • Implants placed under the muscle – To reduce rippling and movement
  • Textured implant surface – To help prevent future displacement
  • Capsulotomy & scar revision – Removing damaged tissue for a better aesthetic result
  • Alloderm support – Providing reinforcement for long-term stability

With the right surgeon and a well-thought-out surgical approach, Kate finally felt she was in good hands.

The Lesson: Research Your Surgeon & Ask the Right Questions

Kate’s long and painful journey highlights an essential lesson: choosing the right surgeon is crucial.

Dr. Rod Rohrich, a world-renowned plastic surgeon, once said:
“A good plastic surgeon is not just a technician but an artist. A bad one can create problems that last a lifetime.”

Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, make sure to:

  • Verify Credentials – Ensure your surgeon is board-certified in plastic surgery (FRACS or equivalent).
  • Beware of “Biggest Regret” Sales Tactics – The right implant size should be based on your anatomy, not a sales pitch.
  • Ask About Long-Term Risks – Understanding potential complications like rippling, displacement, and capsular contracture is essential.
  • Trust Your Instincts – If a surgeon is dismissive, walk away.

Final Thoughts: Your Health & Confidence Are Worth More Than a Discounted Procedure

Kate’s story is a reminder that price should never be the deciding factor when choosing a plastic surgeon.

If you’re considering breast augmentation—or any cosmetic procedure—do your research, ask the hard questions, and never settle for anything less than a board-certified expert who prioritizes patient safety over profit.
