BELKYRA® is an injectable drug used to contour and shape under the chin and around the jawline. This non-surgical treatment can reduce double chins and destroy unwanted fatty tissue in the targeted area.

Also known as Kybella® in the United States, BELKYRA® is an artificial form of deoxycholic acid (a substance found naturally in the body). It works by breaking down the membranes of fat cells, which are then metabolised and eliminated naturally.

This non-invasive procedure usually allows you to return to normal daily activities straight after treatment, although you may experience some swelling and redness.

The Procedure

During a BELKYRA® treatment, tiny injections are administered beneath the chin and around the jawline, or in the targeted areas. The number of injections varies depending on the size of the treatment area. On average, approximately 40–50 injections are required in a single treatment, which takes around 15–30 minutes.

Most patients require 2–4 sessions to achieve optimal results, with a maximum of six treatments. Sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Once the desired results are achieved, they are expected to last for at least four years.

Q. Can BELKYRA® be used anywhere on the body?
A. No. BELKYRA® is only approved for use in the submental region (under the chin).

Q. Is BELKYRA® suitable for everyone?
A. BELKYRA® is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It may also be unsuitable for those with liver or heart conditions, or individuals with medical issues in or near the neck, or difficulty swallowing.

Note: BELKYRA® does not remove excess skin. If you have significant skin laxity around your neck, a neck lift may be a better option.

Q. Does BELKYRA® hurt?
A. A numbing cream or local anaesthetic is usually applied before treatment to minimise discomfort. Ice is also used to control any pain during injections.

Q. Is there any downtime?
A. Generally, no. Most patients can return to their daily activities immediately after treatment, although some redness and swelling are common. Practitioners may recommend avoiding vigorous activity to reduce swelling.

Q. Are there any side effects?
A. As with all injectable treatments, side effects are possible. Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort during injection. Other potential side effects include:

• Numbness

• Swelling

• Redness

• Tingling

• Small areas of firmness under the skin

• Itching around the treatment area
