Clean Living – Small Changes, Big Impact

Clean Living – Small Changes, Big Impact
Clean living isn’t about perfection—it’s about intentionality. It’s the daily practice of reducing toxic exposure, choosing products and habits that honour your body, and creating a healthier environment both inside and out.

At Aesthetic Alchemist, we believe that clean living is a powerful form of self-respect. It’s not about fear—it’s about empowerment, and understanding how everyday choices can influence your skin, hormones, energy, longevity, and emotional wellbeing.

“Clean living is about progress, not perfection. Every small step toward reducing your toxic load adds up in powerful ways.” – Dr. Libby Weaver, nutritional biochemist and author.

🧼 What Is Clean Living?
Clean living is the act of minimising your exposure to environmental toxins found in common products—like cosmetics, cleaning supplies, processed foods, and plastics—and replacing them with safer, more natural alternatives.

The goal? To reduce the burden on your endocrine system, immune function, and detox pathways, allowing your body to thrive.

Studies have shown that endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as phthalates, parabens, and bisphenol A (BPA), are linked to hormonal imbalances, fertility issues, skin problems, and even chronic disease.¹ These compounds are found in everyday items—from skincare to receipts.

🌱 Where to Start Your Clean Living Journey
The best part? You don’t have to overhaul your life overnight. Here’s where to begin:

🧴 1. Skincare & Personal Care
Your skin is your largest organ—and what you apply to it matters. A 2023 report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that women use an average of 12 personal care products daily, containing over 150 ingredients.²

Look for products that are:

Free from parabens, sulphates, phthalates, synthetic fragrance

Cruelty-free

Made with plant-based or organic ingredients

“Your skin absorbs up to 60% of what you put on it. Choose wisely.” – Dr. Trevor Cates, naturopathic doctor and author of Clean Skin from Within.

Clean brands we love: Mukti Organics, Ere Perez, Eco Tan, Weleda, Sans Ceuticals

🧽 2. Home Cleaning Products
Most commercial cleaners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can irritate the lungs, disrupt hormones, and contribute to long-term health issues.

DIY alternatives:

White vinegar + water = multipurpose spray

Bicarb soda = scrubbing agent for sinks and tubs

Lemon juice = natural antibacterial

Essential oils like tea tree and eucalyptus for scent and antimicrobial properties

If DIY isn’t your style, opt for eco-certified brands such as Koala Eco, Resparkle, or Ecostore.

💧 3. Filtered Water & Clean Air
Chlorine, heavy metals, microplastics, and pharmaceutical residues are increasingly found in our tap water. A quality water filter helps reduce this toxic load and supports hydration at the cellular level.

Equally, indoor air quality has a direct impact on respiratory and neurological health. Install a HEPA air purifier if you live in a city, or regularly air out your space and add plants like peace lilies and snake plants to help clean the air.

“The health of your environment reflects in your skin, your hormones, and your sleep.” – Dr. Frank Lipman, functional medicine expert.

🧴 4. Reduce Plastics
Plastic, particularly when heated, releases xenoestrogens—chemical compounds that mimic estrogen in the body and contribute to hormonal disruption.

Simple swaps:

Use glass or stainless-steel containers instead of plastic Tupperware

Ditch cling film for beeswax wraps or silicone lids

Avoid plastic water bottles—opt for BPA-free or stainless steel

Never microwave food in plastic containers

🥬 5. Eat Clean
You are what you eat—and what your food ate. Processed foods often contain preservatives, artificial colours, flavours, and hidden sugars that can tax the liver and disrupt blood sugar balance.

Clean eating is about:

Choosing seasonal, organic produce whenever possible

Avoiding ultra-processed foods, seed oils, and artificial sweeteners

Prioritising plant diversity to support gut health

Reducing alcohol and caffeine if experiencing hormonal or adrenal issues

“The best detox is a clean diet. Your liver is your filter—it just needs less junk to filter.” – Dr. Alejandro Junger, author of Clean.

🧠 Clean Living Also Means Mental Detox
Clean living doesn’t end at your plate or bathroom shelf. It’s also about your mental and emotional environment.

Ask yourself:

Are you constantly overstimulated by screens?

Do your relationships support your wellbeing?

Are you getting enough rest, nature, and joy?

Start here:

Set digital boundaries: no screens 1 hour before bed

Create a restful space at home with candles, books, or calming playlists

Choose community over comparison

Prioritise sleep and mindfulness practices like yoga or meditation

“Clean living is not just a physical act—it’s an emotional one. You have to clear space to let wellness in.” – Brené Brown, researcher and author.

💫 The Takeaway: Start Small, Stay Consistent
Clean living is not a final destination—it’s a daily decision to care for your body, your space, and your energy.

You don’t have to do everything at once. Choose one area to begin with—like switching your skincare or ditching plastic water bottles—and build from there. Over time, these small choices compound into major shifts in your health, your hormones, and your peace of mind.
